Mother carrying two children with text about us.

Southern Birth Justice Network (SBJN) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, nonprofit organization expanding access to midwives, doulas, and community-based perinatal care across South Florida.

SBJN builds on the legacy of the late midwife Ada “Becky” Sprouse, who launched a mobile midwife clinic in Miami around 2008 to serve migrant farmworkers in Homestead. Becky drove the clinic directly to agricultural communities, offering free prenatal and midwifery care to families who often could not access or afford consistent pregnancy care.

After her passing, licensed midwife and Executive Director Jamarah Amani relaunched and expanded the mobile unit through Southern Birth Justice Network. Today, the Mobile Midwife Clinic continues Becky’s mission while reaching more communities across South Florida with prenatal care, postpartum support, education, and essential supplies.

This work honors a powerful lineage of community midwifery and reflects our commitment to bringing care directly to families who have historically been excluded from traditional healthcare systems.

WHY WE EXIST?

The Birth Justice movement works to ensure that every family has the power, resources, and support to make informed decisions about pregnancy, birth, and postpartum care.

Yet many families still struggle to find maternity care that feels safe, respectful, and culturally aligned. Over time, birth has been pushed further away from the community, and the traditions of midwifery and community birth work that once supported generations of families were pushed aside.

Southern Birth Justice Network exists to help bring that care back.

We are movement builders working to restore community-centered birth traditions, expand access to midwives and doulas, and transform the systems that shape pregnancy and birth. We honor the legacy of the birth workers who cared for our communities long before modern hospital systems existed, and we carry that work forward today.

Our vision is a future where every family can access care that respects their voice, before, during, and after birth.

We meet families where they are and build real relationships in the communities we serve.

Southern Birth Justice Network provides care and support to families during pregnancy and after birth. We also train people who want to become birth workers and help grow a strong community-based workforce. Alongside this work, we advocate for policies that protect and support birthing families.

Our Mobile Midwife Clinic brings care directly into neighborhoods that have been historically overlooked.

Our training programs prepare future doulas and midwife assistants to serve their communities with skill and confidence.

Our advocacy work focuses on long-term change so that respectful and culturally rooted care becomes the norm, not the exception.

Together, this work allows us to support families now while helping build a better future for birth.
