SBJN'S Mobile Midwife Clinic (MMC), an innovative mobile outreach program, operating in Miami-Dade County, began operating in underserved communities to ensure that birthing people and families receive quality perinatal screenings and referrals. Mobile Midwife staff, composed of local midwives, doulas, volunteers, interns, and students also distributed diapers, menstrual and postpartum supplies, and taught free childbirth education and nutrition classes.
Since January 2023, we have increased access to midwives and doulas for our folks in Miami-Dade
County. We work to ensure that more expectant and birthing families receive culturally congruent, holistic
support tailored to their specific needs, significantly enhancing their birthing experiences and outcomes.
Some of the unique wrap-around service offerings of SBJN’s Mobile Midwife Clinic include:
-homebirth and birth center access through our network of midwife service providers
-culturally specific home visitation
-accessible midwife and doula services
-fertility counseling addressing the specific infertility needs of Black folks
-culturally congruent mental health therapists
-well-person care (annual checkups, family planning, STI testing and counseling) through our robust referral network
-allied holistic services (chiropractic, acupuncture, massage, lactation support)
-culturally and spiritually supportive care (womb massage, closing of the bones, yoni steam/ bain fey, blessing way)
-family educational offerings (childbirth, nutrition and parenting classes)
-mutual aid for families in need
From 2023-2024, SBJN program outcomes data demonstrated the effectiveness of our model of care, showing a high vaginal birth rate (73%) and significantly lower cesarean section rate (27%) than the county average (48%).
