Reclaiming a healing art for our community:

“There are a lot of traditional birthing customs that were lost throughout the years. Not only did we lose a part of our culture during slavery, but we lost a lot when our foremothers, grandmothers, and our great grandmothers started having their babies in the hospital. The mother wit that would normally be passed down discontinued because our grandmothers, forced with spinal taps or twilight, no longer had a story to tell. - Iya Sarahn Henderson, Grand Midwife

As a community it is time to reclaim our power and our legacy. Health disparities do not exist in a vacuum, but are a reflection of the power disparities in our society that must shift in order for us to be healthy. The focus on holistic care, which involves caring for the whole person, family and community, is what makes a difference in midwifery.

What is a Birth Center?

A birth center is both a clinic for women’s wellness, prenatal and postpartum visits and a location where a birthing person can experience a low intervention and statistically safer vaginal birth with midwife support.

Birth centers can also be so much more! A freestanding birth and wellness center would mean so much to our local communities.

Birth centers are:

  • Essential
  • State-licensed
  • Staffed by midwives
  • Covered by insurance including Medicaid
  • A hub for learning and liberation
  • A space for holistic practices that heal us
  • A site to protect cultural wellness and wholeness

Birth centers provide:

  • Safety and support to those who need it most
  • A way to engage with niche cultural offerings for mamas and families
  • Green space connecting wellness to nature
  • A variety of options for optimal health care and well-being.

What is a Midwife?

Midwife means “with woman.” Midwives are independent care providers for pregnant people. Midwives are the experts in healthy pregnancy and physiologic birth.

Midwives help women and communities understand the importance of education, health, nutrition, healing and control over one’s own body.

Midwifery care has a rich history in communities of color, particularly in the Southern region of the US. Black midwives traditionally provided care for their communities during the harshest times in history: slavery, Jim- crow, and Civil Rights eras.

Why does midwifery care matter?

Our model, Black Midwives Care, is designed to meet the needs of pregnant, birthing and postpartum Black mothers/parents. The Black Midwives Care model is composed of the essential elements that Black midwives have provided to their communities for many generations. It includes respecting racial identity, incorporating cultural elements, connecting with holistic practitioners and being an advocate, among other strategies.

This model is centered around Black mamas, on the realities of our lives. For example, acknowledging that it is essential that health care providers give special attention to building trust. The historical exploitation and abuse of Black folks in the medical industrial complex has implications for health outcomes. There is a dire need for respectful, anti-racist care grounded in an understanding of Birth Justice, in the traditions of Black midwives.
